The high-flying sector caught a bit of gloom at the end of the week due to several discouraging developments.
Shares of Super Micro Computer (SMCI) fell sharply Friday after the company opted not to pre-announce its first-quarter results. This development comes as the semiconductor sector undergoes a sector-wide correction. Bernstein Managing Director and Senior Analyst Stacy Rasgon joins Market Domination to provide insights into this situation. Rasgon acknowledges that while the chip sector is undergoing a correction, "outside of AI" the industry has not been performing well. He notes that other segments of the sector, such as automotive, data centers, PCs, and smartphones, "are not all that great," which could be contributing to the sector-wide pressure, in addition to the disappointing earnings from major players. Rasgon shifts the focus to the question of "the pace of the recovery," noting that the stocks have held up "remarkably" despite the revisions, suggesting this is "a delayed reaction." The broader market has been in flux with the tech-heavy S&P 500 (^GSPC) down for the last trading week. Recent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East haven't been the sole detractor from 2024's market momentum. One of the leaders in the S&P is chip-making powerhouse Nvidia (NVDA) which is down 15% over the past month. Is the rally for Big Tech players over or just on a pause? F/m Investments President and Chief Investment Officer Alex Morris joins Market Domination to discuss the chip sector and Nvidia's recent dip in share price. Morris weighs in on the current market landscape and how Nvidia has performed recently: "It's surprising to see it today. There's no great catalyst for it. Nvidia didn't come out and say 'we're out of the game, AI is over.' But we have to remember Nvidia, Microsoft (MSFT), Big Tech names, they're momentum names and momentum names occasionally need to take a breather... The geopolitical events aren't the catalyst but they are a good opportunity for folks to reevaluate where their money is and sometimes you take your profits." Global shares eased, oil prices surged and U.S. bond yields fell on Friday after reports that Israel attacked Iran, in the latest reminder of how the Middle East tinderbox is casting a growing shadow over markets. Israel's attack on Iranian soil was the latest tit-for-tat exchange between the two arch foes, sending safe haven currencies such as the yen and Swiss franc higher and putting gold on track for its fifth week of gains. Oil prices jumped $3 a barrel on concern that Middle East oil supply could be disrupted, but later pared some of the gains after Iran said it has not plans for an immediate retaliation, denying that any attack had taken place.

TAIPEI (Reuters) -TSMC's Taipei-listed shares tumbled 6.7% on Friday following the company's first-quarter earnings report in which it dialled back its expectations for chip sector growth and did not revise up its capital spending plans, contrary to expectations. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), the world's largest contract chipmaker, forecast second-quarter sales may rise as much as 30% as it rides a wave of demand chips used in artificial intelligence (AI) applications. But it left its capital spending plans for this year unchanged at between $28 billion and $32 billion and reiterated it expected 2024 revenue to rise in the low- to mid-20% range in U.S. dollar terms.
